Mamamoo is hands down my favorite k-pop group. They made their debut in 2014 and have four members: Moonbyul, Solar, Wheein and Hwasa.
Like BTOB they are on the "older" end of the k-pop spectrum. In this case, older meaning they range from 26 to 30. So, you know, not actually old in any way. It was actually the fact that they looked like adults that drew me towards them initially. I had discovered them completely on accident. I had my YouTube set up to autoplay and their song Hip was one that played. The song is super catchy and that just led me down a rabbit hole I've never really come out of.
Their vocals are absolutely gorgeous and they can kill a ballad. However, they manage to shine in everything from party anthems (gogobebe) to jazzy numbers (like Piano Man). It's hard to pick one thing, but I think Decalcomanie is sort of peak everything I love about them. It never fails to put me in a better mood.
All of them have had fairly successful solo projects, which is amazing. Not going to lie though, in this group I have a favorite. But, to be fair, she's probably my favorite k-pop artist period... and that, friends, is Moonbyul. She's amazing.
As I have mentioned before, there is plenty of k-pop that is scripted and artificial. But, whether a testament to their acting skills or to their honest friendship and partnership at this point in their careers, Where Are We Now shows how far they have come and celebrates them both as solo artists and a group. Which is super cheesy. But that's ok, I can live with that. And it's a real highlight on their vocals.
As far as I'm concerned, everything they do is pure gold. I have yet to hear a track I don't love. I grew up in the Spice Girl's generation, and I loved them, but this is where there is some real girl power carrying on that legacy with style.
